The continuing restrictions and issues with Covid are causing us to have to rethink how we support Adult Volunteers to remain compliant with their First Aid Training.   We have sent out many emails to those of us that are out of date and need to complete the training, so we should know who we are.   Not being compliant with Mandatory first Aid training is a barrier to continuing in our roles, so it is vital that we ensure that First Aid training is in date.

We continue to run a blended model for First Response (First Aid) training in the district. This consists of the following modules:

Module 10A – part one – e-learning
Go to https://hampshire-scouts.thinkific.com/courses/firstresponse and undertake the e-learning at your own convenience. Please make sure to register your training under Chester-le-Street District, County Durham when you are prompted for your Scouting location.

Module 10A – part two – trainer facilitated Zoom session
Once you have done your e-learning, you will be sent a prompt to register for a Zoom session (the link will take you to https://chesterlestreetscouts.org.uk/2021/04/29/first-response/). Please only book on to a session if you have completed the e-learning (or will have completed it by the course date).

Module 10B – practical session
You can do this session in less than an hour, again with sessions booked via the link https://chesterlestreetscouts.org.uk/2021/04/29/first-response/). Please only book on to a session if you have completed all parts of the First Response Module 10A (or will have completed it by the course date).

External First Aid Courses and Full First Aid certificates
If you have been trained in First Aid through an external provider, you may be able to credit this through some or all of the Scouting First Response requirements. If you send a scan/photo of your certificate and course syllabus to our First Response trainers – Tony Brewis or Keith Griffin, they will check the syllabus to see if they can be credited for use in Scouting. If there is only a small difference, they can often talk through any missing syllabus content with you.

If you have undertaken an HSE approved First Aid at Work course, then there is a short top up module to complete online to be able to use this in Scouting – https://hampshire-scouts.thinkific.com/courses/fawconversion – once completed, simply send a copy of both certificates to any training adviser to update your Compass record.

What does policy say about First Response?
Leaders, managers and supporters in Scouting must hold a current first aid qualification at the time of gaining their Wood Badge and then renew this at intervals of no more than every three years. The minimum first aid required is First Response, but higher levels of qualification are needed if delivering first aid training or leading certain kinds of activities in remote environments.

Who needs first response?

• All adults in scouting holding a Leader, Manager or Supporter appointment (additionally other adult volunteers may choose to do this training).
• The First Response Certificate is designed specifically for adults in The Scouts and Girlguiding, based on the situations and issues that occur within those roles. It is not, therefore, externally recognised.
• Certificate must be valid when Wood Badge is issued and then renew this at intervals of no more than every three years (see transition guidance in first aid updates).
• All groups undertaking activities in remote environments (as defined in POR rule 9.7i) must have immediate access to someone holding a relevant and current Full First Aid Certificate.
