DC Bits ‘n’ Bobs

Apologies for the gap between Bits n Bobs, like you all, been very busy lately and over the summer break….

Remembrance Day
Due to the work taking place on the market place in Chester le Street, this years parade will be slightly different. In simple terms the format will be a reverse of what has happened in the past. The parade will form up on the road beside the market place and parade up to the car park beside St Mary and St Cuthbert’s Church, where the service will be held. After the service the parade will march off and into Park View School ……where the parade normally starts. I am always extremely proud of how we support Remembrance day parades across the district, every group either participates in the CLS Parade, or in their own local church or local memorial. I alternate between the CLS parade and joining a group at a local parade, this year I will be at a Local parade. For those who want to participate in the CLS Parade meet at the market place at 10:00 am, Sunday 10th November.

First Response,
There are a number of Adult volunteers whose First Response has expired and the training team have been approached to run a First Response Course. This will be on November 24th at 1st Gt Lumley HQ. Start Time of 9:30, please bring a packed lunch. Cost will be £5 to cover the training materials, which we hope is paid by your Group. Please book via the link on the District Website

Date Tuesday 10th December, 6pm
Learning from previous years events we will again be seating young people from 6pm to 6:15. We will then allow family & friends etc to be seated from 6:15 to 6:30. Hopefully we will then be able to seat all young people comfortably. Please aim to arrive prompt at 6:00pm so that we can achieve a 6:30 start

Adult Mandatory Training.
In the training scheme, as well as modules to achieve your woodbadge there is some training that is mandatory and neds to be refreshed at regular intervals…………First Response, Safety, safeguarding. We have a number of people whose Safety and Safeguarding are out of date. The training team will contact those people to remind them of the need to complete this important mandatory training.

County & District events
Thank you so much to all groups and sections that support these events. I fully understand that sometimes it is not possible for adults to be able to be at some of these events. However what is really important is that this is not used as a reason NOT to offer the opportunities to our Young People. Young People Must be offered opportunities. I am invariably at every event and take responsibility for young people if their own leasers cannot. There is also huge support from other groups and their leaders so there is no reason why our young people cannot participate.

Training Validation Drop In
The Training Advisor team will be holding the next drop in session on Wednesday March 13th at 1st Gt Lumley, 6:30 – 9:00. This is an ideal opportunity to get modules validated or just pop in for some advice and guidance. If you intend to come down please let Sharon, our Training Admin on Sharon.gibbons@durhamscouts.org.uk or Greg dc@chesterlestreetscouts.org.uk

Group Events.
I am really lucky to be invited to events at our groups. If your group is holding an event, particularly a fundraiser, and want to get the word out, let me know and I will add it to the Bits N Bobs. This gets sent out to over 160 adults involved in scouting in CLS………….can’t do any harm.

Durham 2020
Bookings are going really well for our very own first International Jamboree. We have groups from USA, Canada, Ireland, Sweden and Finland coming. The latest international booking has come from Sierra Leone. Scouts and Explorers from groups have the opportunity to participate in central catering if they wish and that information has already been sent out. We will be emailing GSL’s and Cub leaders in the next week or so to see if central catering is something that would appeal to cub packs. Groups are, of course, free to cater for themselves if they wish.

Hardly dare come up with a date……………so hopefully we will hold our AGM on Wednesday 6th November……We will email out and confirm in the next two weeks

And Finally……………Thank you to everyone for everything that you do, your skills, commitment and enthusiasm have a profound effect on our young people, Simply….Thank You
